On Location: Screen Gems

The Bluewire team shoots on location at the legendary Screen Gems Studios in Manhattan for a new web campaign for First Response. The crew of eleven included Brent and Greg from our core crew along with lighting, art design, make-up, wardrobe and three production assistants from the SG crew. I directed as the First Response brand team offered insight from their viewing area. There are some photos from set in the photography portfolio. The eight videos will be done soon and we will have two more shoots featuring medial experts and some b-roll with talent / products. More updates on this project as they happen.

Screen Gems’ rich history dates back to the 1940s and the golden age of television and cinema. They delivered many classic tv shows like The Monkees, Dennis the Menace, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie plus many more. Today, they are the home of The Rachel Ray Show, One Tree Hill and others. They are well known as one of the country’s premier studios for commercial production. I was happy to shoot at Screen Gems, the facility and crew were excellent.

As an update: First Response recently launched the campaign with a new youtube channel featuring all eight videos. See it here http://www.youtube.com/firstresponse

Official music video:

I shot and edited this video utilizing a steadicam in this uncut, single take music video for David Uosikkinen’s In The Pocket: The Essential Songs of Philadelphia. The American Dream’s “I Ain’t Searchin’” is the seventh song in the project created to explore and re-record Philly’s essential music with Philadelphia music icons while raising money for the Settlement Music School.

Live video:
As the In The Pocket project moves forward, I feel like we’ve developed a really cool interactive element to the song launch events in which the fans use their mobile devices to record the songs then submit them to me to compile into a video. This is that video. Shot Jan. 11. 2013 at the historic Colonial Theater by our fans. As part of In The Pocket’s continued support of education, the video was edited by Ashlegh Brauer, Holland Messina, Joe Wal and Wedge Wegman in my Drexel University Avid editing course as part of the curriculum. Their edits were complied into one, master music video with some additional color treatment and visual effects.

DOWNLOAD THE TRACK AND SEE MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT AT: WWW.SONGSINTHEPOCKET.ORG

I am extremely grateful to those who recorded and submitted their video.

About the project:
With IN THE POCKET: ESSENTIAL SONGS OF PHILADELPHIA, The Hooters’ David Uosikkinen revisits songs that were either recorded in Philadelphia or written and performed by Philadelphians. These essential songs feature a rotating line up of Philly’s most celebrated musicians. Songs are available for download at songsinthepocket.org. A video documentary by award winning producer/director Steve Acito of Bluewire Media is produced to accompany each song. Acito’s In The Pocket long-form documentary was recently nominated for an Emmy award.
A portion of the proceeds benefit Philadelphia’s Settlement Music School. With six branches in PA and NJ, it is the largest community school of the arts in the United States serving 15,000 students each year regardless of age, race, or financial means. Settlement Music School’s alumni includes some of Philadelphia’s most beloved residents including Kevin and Michael Bacon, Chubby Checker, Stanley Clark, Kevin Eubanks, Buddy Greco, G. Love and Frank Rizzo.

2-time gold medal winning Olympian Carli Lloyd was on set to be in this humorous tv campaign for Burlington VW. The regional TV ad features some visual trickery and a bit of fun. Carli was great on set and her response to the finished ad was “that turned out awesome! I love it ”. This commercial campaign was shot with our Canon 60D package using multiple lens types and the opening shot utilizes a jib arm for the motion. There are a few more photos from on set here along with some photos from when we were on location with Carli’s teammates Shannon Boxx and team captain Christi Rampone here

The other elements of this campaign include web advertising, social media support (facebook, twitter and google+), radio and banner advertising.

Great article here from PhillyBurbs.com and The Burlington County Times.

While supplies last, when you lease vehicle at Burlington VW, you get an autographed Carli Lloyd mini soccer ball…and if you like them on facebook you will be entered to win one. Use this facebook link:

On May 24, 2012, as part of our ongoing tourism initiative for The Jersey Cape’s campaign, I was granted access to the zoo’s two newest residents. Soon to be named five week old snow leopard cubs. I captured one of the cubs first adventures into the wilds of the Cape May County Park and Zoo plus was lucky enough to carefully (and quietly) go behind the scenes and take some HD video of them relaxing with their mother. The video will be part of our 2012 tourism television and web campaign and some of my photographs will be used in the zoos promotion of the newborns.

From their press release:
The Cape May County Zoo is once again proud to announce the birth of Snow
Leopard Cubs on April 10th 2012 to our female ‘Himani’ and our male ‘Vijay’.
This is our 3rd consecutive year with cubs. In 2010 our first cubs were
born, males named ‘Sabu’ & ‘Kaba’. In 2011 we had one male cub born,
‘Nubo’. This year we have 2 cubs, one male and one female both yet unnamed.

We are breeding our pair of Snow Leopards under the direction of the AZA’s
Species Survival Program. All cubs produced are being sent to other AZA
accredited facilities so that they may propagate and strengthen the genetic
pool of the captive population.

Snow Leopards (Panthera Uncia) are one of the most endangered species of
wild cat on the planet with an estimated population of 4000-6000 individuals
left in the wild. Their population has declined by 20% over the past 2
generations, making Snow Leopards survival in the wild very precarious.

That is why Accredited Zoos, like the Cape May County Zoo, participate in a
captive breeding program to ensure the survivability of Snow Leopards in the
wild. Through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), genetically compatible
animals are matched up in hopes that they successfully produce offspring.
The offspring will then enter the SSP breeding program at other accredited
facilities and will continue to propagate, ensuring that genetically diverse
populations of animals exist in captivity. This captive population acts
like an insurance policy, if wild populations ever become unsustainable then
a very genetically strong population exists in Zoos that will allow for the
repatriation of animals back into the wild.

The Cape May County Zoo is proud to participate in this worthy program for
these extremely rare cats. There are approximately 150 Snow Leopards in
accredited zoos in North America. Historically the captive population of
Snow Leopards has been declining due to poor reproduction, but because of
strong leadership from the SSP, the captive population has been increasing
the past few years. Successful captive reproduction is still a rare event
though , with only 11 births in 2008, 14 births in 2009 and 11 births in
2010. The Cape May county Zoo is happy to have been one of those successes.
Having had successful breeding here, we are helping to diversify the
captive population and, in turn, helping the survivability of these great cats in the wild.

With the recent passing of legendary musician Levon Helm, I felt obligated to crack open the archives and review an episode of Live at the Bubba Mac Shack from 2001. At that point the program, which I’d created with entrepreneur and musician Herb Birch as a vehicle to promote both the restaurant and his career as an artist, had really gained quite a following. We are attracting bigger and hipper musical acts and had expanded to air on a few new networks. On 8.10.01 we were lucky enough to have booked Bob Margolin’s Rolling Fork Review, which was as Herb put it, “a mini blues festival”. The Rolling Fork Review in all reality was a bunch of blues/rock legends getting together to jam, it featured some amazing players plus Levon Helm and of course, Bob Margolin.

At that point we had shoot quite a few bands, quite a few icons I’d say but this shoot stood out to me more than any other. I’d always loved The Band and their work plus Levon recently contributed on “Largo” that was Rob Hyman’s from the Hooters project, so for me the timing was perfect. Levon had been battling cancer for quite a while at this point and was having a hard time talking and didn’t sing a note during the set, but the show was amazing. Seeing him play and love every beat of every song was really touching. The difference was, after the show he came up to me and asked about it…he showed a real interest, that obviously meant quite a bit to me as it’s co-creator and director. We talked for quite a while and while his voice was strained I think he asked more questions than I did and talked quite a bit more as well. The conversation turned to his health, music, what it was like for him as a solo artist along with other things that time and distance from the event have sadly wiped from my memory.

After a bit of time while my crew and I were packing up the gear from the shoot, we spoke for a few more minutes as this unassuming rocker and I loaded his drum kit into his convertible and he was off. Too cool.

The show went on the air and was one of the episodes we had the most viewer feedback and requests about over the time it aired and is really special to me especially since it was nominated for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy® Award (my first Emmy® nomination). It’s been in storage since the show went off the air but at this point I figured it was time to upload.

The Drexel InterView is a lively and award-winning half-hour original television series hosted by best-selling author, critic, and Drexel University Distinguished Professor Paula Marantz Cohen. The Drexel InterView, which premiered in 2004, currently airs on some 325 PBS, university-affiliated, and community-access television stations throughout the United States. Selected episodes may also be seen on YouTube.com.

Each episode of The Drexel InterView features a half-hour conversation with a nationally known or emerging talent in the arts, culture, science, or business. Guests reflect a diversity of opinions and backgrounds. The series is now in its ninth season and has featured over 100 guests.

The History of The Drexel InterView

The Drexel InterView had its debut in 2004 when Drexel University decided to take advantage of the many important figures in science, business, art, and culture who pass through Philadelphia each year. Drexel’s art museum, the A.J. Drexel Picture Gallery, had recently been renovated, making it an ideal setting for a television program that would engage its guests in discussions of some depth. Paula Marantz Cohen, a Distinguished Professor of English, whose fields of research and writing spanned a variety of fields, volunteered to serve as host. Charles Fuller, Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright, was the show’s first guest.

Approximately one dozen guests are interviewed each year; more than 100 programs have been produced to date. The shows air on over 325 PBS and community- and university-affiliated stations throughout the country.
